Still today, even on the Internet, You have to Sell Yourself First!

Still today, even on the Internet, You have to Sell Yourself First!
By John Summer, JTZ Enterprise

Today the Internet and how it relates to the automotive industry is all a buzz on several things. Social media is the new hot topic for car dealers. Customer Relations Management (CRM) tools and cheaper website providers are advancing onto the scene. Dealers and their Internet managers are working on finding easy, efficient ways to get their cars on Craigslist. On top of all that, dealers are trying to find THE place to advertise their vehicles online. With all the time and effort a dealer could put into the Internet and with the limited amount of time most dealers have, it is important to remember one thing, Sell Yourself First!

When a car buyer comes on your lot you are already selling yourself, even if you are not there. That car buyer sees your road side sign, notices the way your cars are parked in straight lines, sees the quality of your building, pavement and other signs. Even if they don’t see a salesperson, they are getting a feel for what type of dealership you are. You start selling yourself first when you pick out the colors and logos you want to use on that sign out front. You give yourself an image when you pick your location, stock your lot, and park your cars, even if you don’t know it. It all starts with selling yourself, your business, then your product.

When that same car buyer moves further along in the buying process they all ask themselves one question, “Do I want to spend my money with this guy or gal?” Now that person could be you or your salesperson or manager. Whoever that is, they better have sold themselves to this buyer, or the deal is not going to happen! The way they are dressed, the way they approach, meet and greet, these are all ways a good salesperson starts selling them self even before they say hello.

Once you have sold yourself, now it is time to go to work. The problem is, if you are good at selling yourself, that will only take a minute, it is the rest of the work in selling that takes all the time. In today’s world we are all trying to do more with less. Sometimes with all the work that is required of us in order to be successful, we forget to always sell ourselves. Sometimes the newest trend or next sure-fire way to sell cars distracts us from doing what we are all good at, selling our self first.

Now, you are comfortable with your business image, you are impressed with the way your staff presents themselves, and you have the location and inventory other dealers envy. Are any of these tools mentioned in the beginning going to help your bottom line? YES, if you have the time.

Craigslist, for instance has become one of the most sought after online advertisers by car dealers in recent months and the best part is its free. Yet, if you are posting your cars on this site, don’t forget to sell yourself first! In addition to your car photos and information, each post should include your dealership’s graphic logo matching the logo on your dealership’s website. You should see your dealership’s name and telephone number in the post. If you have a slogan or advertising jingle it should come after your contact information. Only then are you ready to sell your product.

The jury is still out for some while others think the train has already left the station when it comes to social media. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and others have all built up huge numbers of users. If you are unfamiliar with the term “social media”, it refers to these sites because they are places you can go to and connect with just about anyone out there. By connect I mean you can meet new people, find past friends, and better stay connected with current friends and family. These sites often provide a page for each user and this gives friends and family a place to visit when they want to know what you are up to. When you sign up for your page and account you answer a lot of questions about yourself. This information is used to describe you to your page visitors and for other marketing reasons. For instance, if you say you are interested in cars, the next time you log into the site you might be introduced to other car lovers and you might see a few more car ads. These sites afford you, the user, with a lot of freedom to do and say what you want. It’s important to remember if you say it on the Internet, it may never go away.

Google search trends indicate one of the fastest growing search terms is “how to delete my facebook/myspace page”. Privacy concerns and the flood of advertisers are turning some away but still, Facebook will probably have reached 500 million users by the time this article is printed. This media takes time to manage and therefore it is important to measure the ROI, return on investment. If you could pay someone to manage your Facebook account and pay someone else to manage your online inventory listings and photos, you want to know which one has the higher ROI. If you ask your car buyers why they bought from you, you may find more people are going to say because they found your cars on your site or on Cars.com, for instance, than you will those who say they found your picture on Facebook. Social media is a great way to sell yourself but requires time and effort to maintain that presence if you are going to do it right. If you are not, the image you are selling will not help.

Some dealers are looking at CRM programs to help manage their leads. This is a good idea for those with a lot of leads from multiple sources. However, you don’t want to let the car buyer know about this tool unless you want to make them feel like a number. Treat them like you want to be treated and remember, you are always selling yourself.

Having a custom website is a must for every car dealer who wants to sell themselves the best way possible. However, some dealers still rely on a template or cookie cut site. Often times these sites are cheaper because they involve no work. The site is stripped down of all services and features such as emails, Company History (sell yourself first) search engine optimization and site updates. If your website looks like another dealer’s site you should turn it off. You have your own business image and watering it down with this type of advertisement is only going to hurt the image you have worked hard to create for you and your business. Often times your website is the first opportunity you have to sell yourself so why shoot yourself in the foot? Start off right by selling yourself first!

Now, go sell something!

Warriors recognized for sportsmanship

For the second time in three seasons, the JTZ Warriors boys basketball team has been recognized by Stafford County with the Red Fines Good Sportsmanship Award. Winners of the award are chosen by their opponents at the end of each season and it is a testament not only to how well a team plays but to how well they carry themselves on and off the court before, during, and after each game.

The award is named for Red Fines, a former Stafford resident who helped establish youth sports in Stafford County before parks and recreation was organized. The award is given to parks and recreation youth sports teams that exemplify good sportsmanship and fair play. Winners are chosen by their fellow coaches and players of the league in which they play.

At the awards ceremony, coach John Summer congratulated his players. Team leaders this year were Zach Summer, Tyler Johnson, Chris Johnson, Colin Haberbosch, Josh Dixon and Derek Thornton.

JTZ Warriors (48) vs RS&G (19) 01/18/2010

It was a total team effort put in by the JTZ Warriors. They maintained a ten point lead most of the game but really opened it up in the fourth quarter when they held the opponent scoreless while pouring in twenty points. Ulyses Mack was one of the leading scorers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Johnson also had 14 points and contributed six steals and three rebounds. Both Josh Dixon and Colin Haberbosch had solid performances with eight rebounds each. Derek Thornton was also aggressive on the boards with four rebounds and Tyler Stemple played great ball on both sides of the floor. Chris Johnson gave his best defensive performance of the season. Even though Zach Summer is out for the season due to injury he really proved to be a team player helping the coach with key match ups and with time outs through out the game. The JTZ Warriors hope to have the same success again tomorrow night at HH Poole Middle School.

Team 7 (32) vs JTZ Warriors(30) 01/13/2010

This was a re match from earlier in the season and unfortunately we had the same result. Team 7 jumped out to an early lead and while the Warriors had a lead for a short time they played catch up most of the night. Tyler Johnson put in a notable performance with 4 blocked shots. The team relied on the scoring of Ulyses Mack and the rebounding from Josh Dixon. Tyler Stemple managed the offense most of the evening and both Colin Haberbosch and Derek Thornton controlled the area under the basket. The Warriors had a chance to tie it at the end but it was not enough. The JTZ Warriors look to rebound with their upcoming game against the Suns on Wednesday.

The Suns (47) vs JTZ Warriors (40) 01/09/2010

Another gritty performance put in by the Warriors but their five guys were not able to hold back the opponent’s eight as they come up short in another close game. The Warriors’ team captains, Ulyses Mack and Tyler Johnson, had outstanding performances on both ends of the floor. Both led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. Colin Haberbosch continues to get stronger with every game, especially on defense. Derek Thornton played an aggressive, high tempo game all four quarters. Tyler Stemple is proving in the future he will be a team captain with the way he controls the offense from the point guard position. However, the Suns came with their A game and topped the Warriors 47 to 40.

Warriors vs Mosiniak

Dec. 9

Team Mosiniak 32, JTZ Warriors 28

The Warriors played catch up the entire night. Tyler Johnson once again had five blocked shots for the game and Ulyses Mack led the team in scoring. Colin Haberbosch, Derek Thornton, Zach Summer, Chris Johnson and Tyler Stemple put in great performances, and the Warriors got to within three points a couple of times late in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t make up the difference.JTZ Warriors

Warriors vs Crush

HH Poole
Crush vs. Warriors

PPVW Crush 26 – JTZ Warriors 36
Wednesday night we saw another great match up at HH Poole Middle School. The JTZ Warriors got off to a slow start on offense but never lost the lead. The team’s leading scorers and rebounders were Ulyses Mack, Josh Dixon, and Tyler Johnson. Zach Summer showed versatility by playing all the offensive positions through out the game. Derek Thornton put in one of his best efforts with an awesome block late in the game that broke the opponent’s spirit. Chris Johnson fought through a minor injury and did a great job on the perimeter controlling the ball. Colin Haberbosch has been putting in one solid performance after another with aggressive play on defense and Tyler Stemple directed the offense from the guard position through out the night. The team effort put in by all eight Warriors led them to a ten point victory. Go Warriors!Read All About It!

Warriors vs Punishers

BASKETBALL Dec. 5
JTZ Warriors 41, Punishers 26

The Warriors only had five players due to SAT tests and illness. But the Warriors grabbed an early lead and never let go. Ulyses Mack was the Warriors’ leading rebounder and scorer, with 19 points. Josh Dixon was the team’s best free-throw shooter and also provided eight points and seven rebounds. Colin Haberbosch put in an excellent performance on defense. Tyler Johnson and Tyler Stemple took turns controlling the ball on offense and did an excellent job taking control of the perimeter defense. All five players scored, had at least one rebound and got at least one steal, all while demonstrating excellent teamwork. Watch Those Warriors GO!

Did we get anything done in 2009? You bet we did!

You would have to live on Mars to not know how tumultuous 2009 was for the automotive industry. We could recant what happened to the big 3, we could review what happened to our credit and floorplan sources, we could speculate what might be thrown at us next, but what good will that do? Another question might be, “What did we get done right in 2009?” Sometimes focusing on our accomplishments rather than drowning in our shortcomings is all it takes to help clarify the path we must take forward.

The year started with a financial crunch to the Association and in April’s board meeting they elected to suspend the pay per click campaign VIADA had for its retail website, www.VirginiaUsedCarDealers.com (VUCD) and divert those funds to the Association directly. However, even though we stopped this form of advertising for now, the traffic to the site has since increased by over 20% and continues to grow in overall site viewers, unique visitors and page visits.

VUCD also added a new service at the first of 2009 with the Craigslist/Ebay listing tool. This feature will use the information about your listings to create a description page in HTML code which can be copied and pasted into other sites like craigslist to create listings that look as nice as those you see new car dealers using. The listings automatically include your dealer information, link to your website and your company logo. Not for the feint of heart as you have to know what copy and paste mean and not be afraid of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language).

Later in the year, after many dealers came to us saying they either did not have the time or ability to post regularly on Craigslist but wanted to have their listings on the site, JTZ Enterprise began offering the service of posting your listings, 25 at a time, every week for only $100 a month. Whether you do it or you have someone do it there are some things to know about Craigslist. It is a social media site trying to dispel all retail. It is policed by its own users and therefore finicky at times. You cannot double post the same listing. Some dealers who specialize in few makes find it hard to list more than one of the same Make and Model without the site flagging it as a duplicate and removing the listing even though they are two different vehicles, maybe even different years. Another note, all listings automatically expire and therefore require someone to constantly re-list the vehicles on a regular basis. Some say it is a lot of work. More tell us it is the best thing working for them right now.

It was actually late in 2008 we got started with www.MAPPVA.com but it was not until the plan actually kicked off we began to see the results. This website represents the partnership between VIADA, the Better Business Bureau and the Military to provide “outstanding quality, sales, service, and education to service members in their vehicle purchasing efforts”. The statistics for this site show the military and the BBB have done an outstanding job of doing their part to make this program known to all the Hampton Roads military personnel. If you are not signed up for this program and do business in the Tidewater area, you should sign up today. It is free as long as you are a member of both VIADA and BBB and adhere to the terms and agreements of the Military Appreciation Purchase Program.

About the middle of the year, JTZ Enterprise and VIADA began working on a complete makeover of www.VIADA.org. In keeping with the image VIADA has made and wants to brand itself with, we unveiled the new design in July. The site’s security certificate was upgraded, the shopping cart pages for forms orders were updated and the events information became more readily accessible from the home page. The newest feature added to the site is the VIADA Blog. This area of the site is how the staff members of VIADA are able to more quickly get out the important pieces of information you as a dealer need to know. Check out the Blog area by visiting the site and clicking on the word blog in the top right corner of the page.

Back to VUCD, it was about this same time we began tightening up the search results the public gets when doing their research at the site. A simple VIN decoder was also added to assist those dealers who enter their listings manually. It will retrieve the Year, Make and Model of the VIN for most vehicles 1983 and newer. It often requires you to select which engine or transmission matches your vehicle and will then come up with the EPA City and Highway ratings once you do.

In May, the page a dealer gets once they successfully log into VUCD began displaying the three most recent leads your dealership got from VUCD. If your dealership’s website is hosted by JTZ Enterprise you would also get a list of those leads recently received via your website. Both lists also had links to those listings received in the last thirty or 60 days or all listings. This then grew into another service we offer some dealers that basically tracks and saves leads from all other online advertisers you may have. The Customer Relations Management tool is simple to use in tracking leads from a multitude of sources.

I have heard it said the mechanic’s car is sometimes the last to get any service. Especially if he is a busy mechanic! When VIADA’s site got a makeover we felt it was time we spruce up our own site. www.JTZEnterprise.com got its own face-lift late in the summer. One thing worth noting on this is the site now has a copy of all The Internet Corner articles in our blog area and can be reviewed anytime by visiting our site and clicking on the JTZ Blog button in the top right corner.

Late in the year, JTZ Enterprise grew some when we purchased a competitor who wanted to retire. On December 7, 2009 the merger between JTZ Enterprise and Witt & Lowery, Inc. was complete. None of the clients involved were auto industry related so it broadened our universe in a few ways and we look forward to servicing all our clients through out 2010. If either VIADA or JTZ Enterprise can help you sell more cars this year, please call or e-mail me. We are here to help.

Facts to consider when looking ahead to 2010

Did you know? www.VIADA.org recently unveiled a new look and design. All the same features are there and a few new ones such as the Blog area, easier navigation features, and updating the VIADA brand image to include “From the Mountains to the Sea”. Give Lois, David and the staff all the credit.
Did you know? The first website ever registered was symbolics.com on March 15, 1985.
Did you know? By 2008 the number of surfers grew to almost 1.5 billion surfers in 2008.
Did you know? 215 million (or more than 70%) Americans use the Internet today. It took 38 years for the radio to reach 50 million homes. It took 13 years for the television to reach the same levels. It took the Internet just five years.
Did you know? When you are using any Internet Browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox are the most popular) you can click the F3 button above the numbers on your keyboard and it will allow you to search that page for text. Let’s say you Googled “appendicitis symptoms” and you followed a link to a medical site that appears to talk about everything else other than what you want to know. Google sent you there for a reason so searching for the same keywords with this feature will bring you to the area of the page pertaining to your search.
Did you know? You can get the answer to just about any question by Googling it. This term is used when you search for anything at search engines like Google.com.
Did you know? In 1990 the phrase “World Wide Web” was created by Tim Berners-Lee.
Did you know? There are over 333 million active email accounts in the US in 2008. In fact, it is said the use of email and instant messaging has significantly reduced long distance calls for both individuals and businesses. There is a real shift of people canceling their landline in favor of cell and Internet phone options.
Did you know? The computer in your cell phone today is a million times cheaper, a thousand times more powerful and one hundred thousand times smaller than the computer built at MIT in 1965.
Did you know? If MySpace was a country and the number of users represented its population it would be considered the eleventh largest country in the world.
Did you know? www.JTZEnterprise.com recently got a new look. If you go to our Blog area you can see a complete archive of The Internet Corner articles submitted over the last several years.
Did you know? You can highlight text when looking at just about any type of program, as long as that text is not part of an image, by dragging your mouse over the desired text. Once you have it highlighted hold down the CTL key (the control key is to the left and even with your space bar) and then click the C key. This will copy the text (and in some cases images also) to a clipboard. Now if you open another program, maybe your email, you can place the cursor where you want to put the text, hold down the CTL key and click the V key to paste what you have on the clipboard to the message. This is handy if you want to make changes to your website because you can highlight, copy and paste what you want changed to an email, make then changes and send it. Your web people can then paste it into your site’s code and there is no chance for error.
Did you know? JTZ Enterprise website owners have eight different counters available to them. These not only tell you how many people visit your website but also where they came from, where they went in your site, how long they stayed and a whole lot more. When surfers visit your site via search engines these counters can even tell you what keywords were used to find you and which search engines are driving the most traffic to you.
Did you know? www.VirginiaUsedCarDealers.com (VUCD) recently implemented a VIN decoder. It is not as robust as the one seen by our window sticker users but it has made it easier and faster for those entering their vehicles manually.
Did you know? When you advertise your cars on VUCD they also show up on several other free automotive classified websites automatically. Look for your cars in places like oodle.com, lemonfree.com and justgoodcars.com. You also have access to a tool that helps you get your cars listed one at a time on Craigslist.
Did you know? The cell phone or “mobile device” will be the primary source of Internet connection by 2020.
Did you know? www.VIADA.org gets more visitors every month than we have members. Non-members use this site to buy forms and to get education class information.
Did you know? www.MappVA.com is at the end of its inaugural year and what a success! Traffic to the website for the Military Appreciation Purchase Program is strong and the leading sources of third party traffic (clicks from non search engine sites) come from several news articles introducing the program and saying great things about VIADA and its members. The URLs are long but if you email me I will reply with links to these articles.
Did you know? In the beginning Yahoo! listed their search results in alphabetical order. This is why Amazon got so much exposure early on.
Did you know? The average surfer today will visit 60 websites in a month and view more than a thousand pages and spend 25 hours doing it.
Did you know? The Obama campaign spent three million dollars on Internet advertising during the campaign with more than two million of that going to Google for Pay Per Clicks.
Did you know? Advertising dollars spent on Internet are growing at double digit rates while spending on T.V, radio and newspapers is declining at double digit rates. Some newspapers, which had been around for almost a hundred years or more, have already gone under.
Did you know? According to the most recent Manheim Market Report, 54% of all walk-in traffic has already visited your dealership online. That would mean a dealer with out a site is getting only 46% of the walk-ins…
Did you know? The facts in this article were obtained from the Internet.
